Whiffletree Farm Memory Quilts
Then and Now
For the past several years it has been my pleasure and indeed my honor to create Memory Quilts using T-shirts and other clothing items and send them off to grateful loved ones from coast to coast. I secured orders for quilts via this website as well as Etsy and they were created for sale; for profit.
I will continue to create Memory Quilts and the smaller Baby Clothes Quilts by special request but my interest and focus has turned to creating ponderosa pine needle baskets, a craft I learned while living in the Black Hills of South Dakota. My work can be found and purchased at Prairie Edge Trading Co. & Galleries in Rapid City, South Dakota or directly from me by special request.
Please see examples of all types of work I have done on the HOME page slide show, the GALLERY and the REPURPOSED GOODS category of this website.
By scrolling down at this point you will find schematic drawings of T-Shirt Memory Quilts in all available sizes as well as a section that describes Baby Clothes Quilts.
Baby Clothes quilts
Memories of her baby will remain in a Mother's heart forever. But now, preserved in a quilt, a Mother (and her Child) have the memories and visions of that baby cooing and romping at special occasions or at everyday events wearing baby outfits that have been saved and treasured.
Baby Clothes Memory Quilts are constructed using 8-inch blocks (rather than 12-inch) to accomodate the tiny size of baby clothes.
The 20-block Baby Clothes Memory Quilt or Wall Hanging measures approximately 50 inches (4 feet) wide and 60 inches (5 feet) long.
The 12-block Baby Clothes Memory Quilt or Wall Hanging measures approximately 40 inches (3 feet) wide and 50 inches (4 feet) long - a size usually associated with a crib or lap quilt.
QUILT CONSTRUCTION: It is my goal to create a Memory Quilt of heirloom quality that the recipient will enjoy using day-to-day. To this end, each baby item is backed with Pellon Fusi-Knit. This fusible interfacing helps the fabric hold its shape and gives additional strength. Quilting quality 100 per cent cotton fabric is used for the quilt sashings, border and backing. In this case, pink gingham was chosen for the backing to compliment and coordinate with the crib sheet inset. The quilt batting is also 100 per cent cotton. The quilt is hand tied with heavy cotton thread. The Whiffletree Farm signature top stitching is machine sewn around the perimeter of the quilt border(s) for added strength and stability. A 1/2 inch double folded fabric binding is hand sewn around the entire quilt using an invisible stitch.
